The Meaning Woven into SEIGAIHA

The Story Behind SEIGAIHA

Carrying our origin, our prayers, and the calm rhythm of the waves.

SEIGAIHA is a KIMONO design inspired by the traditional Japanese pattern known as Seigaiha.

Seigaiha depicts gentle waves layered one after another, spreading endlessly across the sea.
In Japanese culture, it has long been cherished as an auspicious pattern, symbolizing peaceful days, lasting happiness, and the wish for a calm future.

For KIMONO, SEIGAIHA carries a special meaning.

It is the Judo Gi that represents the beginning of KIMONO.
It is, in many ways, our origin.

Why SEIGAIHA

At KIMONO, we believe a gi should be more than equipment for competition.

A Judo Gi is worn in training and in matches.
But it is also a garment worn when we bow, show respect, face our opponent, and face ourselves.

Seigaiha does not represent violent waves.
It represents calm waves, continuing without end and spreading with quiet strength.

That image reflects something essential in martial arts.

Not only power, but harmony.
Not only victory, but growth as a person.
Not only the pursuit of strength, but respect for others and connection through practice.

KIMONO placed that spirit into SEIGAIHA.

A Prayer for Peace

SEIGAIHA carries a prayer for peace.

In recent years, the world has faced wars, division, uncertainty, and hardship across many countries and regions.
The COVID-19 pandemic also changed the way people lived, trained, connected, and supported one another.

Through times like these, the value of martial arts becomes even more meaningful.

To respect others.
To face one another with courtesy.
To learn together, beyond differences in country, culture, and background.

Judo and Jiu-Jitsu are not only about winning or losing.
They are cultures of discipline, respect, and mutual growth.

Into the waves of SEIGAIHA, KIMONO placed the spirit of martial arts and a wish for a calmer, more peaceful world.

A Wish for Recovery in Tohoku

SEIGAIHA also carries a prayer for recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.

That disaster changed countless lives in an instant.
There were things lost, things changed, and moments that could never return in the same way.

And yet, people continued to move forward.
Step by step, they supported one another, rebuilt, and rose again.

The Seigaiha pattern shows waves that continue without breaking.
To us, those waves resemble hope — a quiet connection from the past, through hardship, and into the future.

KIMONO placed our feelings for Tohoku and our wish for recovery into this pattern.

Like waves that continue gently onward.
Like people’s hopes being passed forward, spreading, and reaching the future.

SEIGAIHA is a model shaped by that prayer.

As the Origin of KIMONO

SEIGAIHA is the Judo Gi that symbolizes the beginning of KIMONO.

We wanted to share the spirit of Japanese martial arts with the world.
We wanted to express Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship through a gi.
And we wanted to connect people and cultures through martial arts wear.

That is where KIMONO began.

Seigaiha is a pattern of waves spreading endlessly.
That image overlaps with KIMONO’s own journey — carrying Japanese martial arts spirit and Japanese beauty from Japan to the world.

From one gi, culture begins to spread.
Through one martial artist’s training, the spirit is passed on.
Small waves gather and become a greater current.

SEIGAIHA is KIMONO’s origin, and it carries the philosophy we will continue to value.

For Those Who Wish for a Peaceful Future

SEIGAIHA is a pattern of peace and harmony.

For those who face martial arts with sincerity.
For those who value respect.
For those who refine themselves while cherishing connection with others.
For those who believe in a calm future beyond hardship.

KIMONO brought Seigaiha into a Judo Gi to place those feelings into a single piece of martial arts wear.

SEIGAIHA is not merely a pattern to wear.
It is a design made to carry KIMONO’s origin, a prayer for peace, and hope that continues into the future.
